Have you ever been so curious to know the toughest dog in one-on-one combat with other dogs but confused because of the many different breeds of dogs out there numbering over 168 recognized dog breeds in the American Kennel Club (AKC)?
Many people including me would have thought the American pit bull terrier is the strongest dog.
This is largely due to its solid build, jaw strength, and heroic history.
It was famously used for bloodsport and bull baiting by Britain before the introduction of the Animal Welfare Act on August 24, 1835, which regulates the treatment of animals in research, teaching, testing, exhibition, transport, and all dealers.

The American Pitbull weighs over (13-27kg) and has a height of (43-55cm).
They are tenacious fighters with much aggression on display and have a life span of 12-16 years. The American bull terrier, despite its beauty to behold with its muscular bodies and shiny, short coats, does not come close to being among the strongest breeds of dog in the world.
During fights, they attack what is more exposed and not just the neck of other animals, Pitbull terriers have a bite force of 240-330 psi which is less compared to other breeds of dogs that will be discussed in this article.
Which breed is the toughest if the American Pitbull Terrier stands no chance?
The Mystery Breed
The breed of dog that will win in a one-on-one fight with others has to be the endurance breed.
They don’t necessarily have to fight the hardest and one of the endurance breeds is pit bulls.
They are known for their fighting prowess, the pit bulls would fight until they could fight no more but, they do not have the most pressure in their jaws by far.
A pitbull has roughly 250 lb of pressure in its jaws which disqualifies it as a breed of dog to win in a one-on-one fight with others.
So in this article, we will talk about the strongest breeds of dogs that can win in one-on-one combat.
Rottweiler: The Ultimate Protectors
Rottweilers were originally bred in Germany as working dogs for herding and guarding livestock while pitbulls were bred in England for bull-baiting.
Rottweilers are generally larger than pit bulls with a more muscular build and are often seen working with police and military forces worldwide.
They combine agility, endurance, and power, making them excellent working dogs in demanding roles.
Known for their intelligence and fearlessness, Rottweilers are as sharp mentally as they are strong physically.
This breed’s muscular build enables it to perform various tasks, from pulling carts to guarding property.
Historically bred to drive cattle and pull carts for butchers, their endurance and strength have always been vital to human communities.
Rottweilers continue to impress with their training capacity and unwavering dedication to their tasks.
Rottweilers have a height of 61-69cm, and a jaw strength and bite of 328 psi.
They have a fiercer bite force compared to the American Pitbull Terrier, they are also larger and weigh more and will likely defeat the American Pitbull in a fight.
Fila Brasileiro :
The Fila Brasileiro is a brazilian breed of mastiff.
They are used as guard dogs and for big game hunting.
In the eighteenth century, when slavery was still legal in Brazil, the Fila Brasileiro was used to return escaped slaves to their original owners.
Fila Brasileiro are so powerful that they are also used to chase Jaguars because of their aggressive predatory nature.
It is illegal to own any of these dogs without specific exemption from a court in countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Australia, Hong Kong, and Cyprus.
In Turkey, it is illegal to own and breed a Fila Brasileiro; in some countries like Trinidad and Tobago, the males cannot be imported.
Fila Brasileiro weighs 41- 50kg, with an average height of 60cm-70cm, and a bite force of 400 PSI, they can easily defeat rottweilers that have a bite force of 328psi and Pitbull terriers with a bite force of 240-330 psi stands no chance in a one-on-one battle.
Kangal Shephard Dog
Of all recognized dog breeds the Kangal shepherd has the strongest bite force and that is why they are the king of dogs.
The Kangal are dogs belonging to the Anatolian shepherd Dog breeds in Turkey., as you would imagine, they are very protective and defensive of the people they consider their family.
They have an outstanding bite strength of 743 psi, more than 3x stronger than the Doberman! They can and have killed wolves and even bears. It has the strongest bite strength of any recognized dog breed.
Kangal’s are very tall and pitbulls are very short so, the Pitbull would take the legs out from underneath the kangal unless the Kangal was able to snap the pitbulls neck before that occurred.
Kangals have thicker coats which usually grow to be approximately 4 inches (10 cm) in length which means they will incur less damage from any attack on their throat.
Promoting or speculating on dog fights is unethical and goes against responsible pet ownership. Dogs are companion animals, and their well-being should be prioritized. Instead, focus on understanding each breed’s characteristics, promoting positive training methods, and ensuring the overall welfare of dogs.
