Should You Give a Dog as a Gift?
Should you give a dog as a gift? Why not!!!
Dogs are wonderful companions capable of developing unconditional love, bond, and support for their owner which is anĀ attribute that is hard to find in any other that can be a gift.
But before you present a dog as a gift, just like any other gift, there have to be some considerations.
Here are a few things to consider before you should gift a dog to someone.
1. What does the Person Want:
Sometimes, we make the mistake of thinking everyone loves what we love or they desire what we want or we can easily predict what they desire.
Do not make such a mistake when it comes to gifting a pet animal such as a dog.
Owning a dog is a long-term commitment and responsibility that not everyone can commit to especially non-pet lovers.
You have to be certain that the intended recipient of your generous pet gift loves pet animals and is ready to own one.
One of the easiest and fastest ways to know is by asking.
Do not isolate because they have pictures of pet animals saved on their mobile devices or because they follow pet animal pages on social media or professional blogs like whiskerfurs.com.
Sometimes, some people are only pet admirers while others might have one but do not have the time, resources, or energy to commit.
In our case, our niece and her parents were equally ready and committed to responsibly owning a pet dog.
2. Lifestyle Compatibility:
Imagine the intended recipient of your gift is a timid and quiet 22-year-old lady named Febe who is always indoors ordering all her meals while working as a tech professional in a small apartment.
If you buy her an adult Pit bull terrier, you might have created a problem with your generous pet gift.
Feb will most likely be compatible with a puppy that has a lower energy level, does not require a large space to roam around, and does not suffer from separation anxiety.
Before you make that purchase of a dog breeder or an animal shelter you have to make important considerations of the intended recipient’s compatibility for a harmonious relationship.
Considerations such as :
- Activity level
- Living space
- Working Schedule
- Children and Family
- Allergies
- Grooming
- Health
- Maintenance
3. Long-term commitment:
Dog ownership is a long-term commitment that can span over a decade usually between 10-15 years if they are puppies or young dogs.
Sometimes we are moved by emotions, sentiments, or trends when purchasing items but that cannot and should not apply to pet animals.
They are not items or belongings that can be discarded away when we are over the emotions or sentiments.
Pet animals, require great love, care, attention, and companionship from their owners, and owning one is also parenthood.
Any recipient must be ready for a long-term commitment to a pet dog.
4. Surpised Vs Choice:
While it might be more thrilling to visit your intended recipient with the dog a surprise or have someone deliver it safely, you might consider allowing the person to make their choice in a way that retains the surprise.
You can donate to a local shelter close to the intended recipient’s neighborhood where they can choose their preference for themselves.
A lifetime commitment to owning a dog has to be more than a surprise but a choice and conviction.
Often times the answer to the question “Should You Give a Dog as a Gift?” is a YES!
